The Truth About Pool Ownership

Owning a pool can feel like the ultimate backyard luxury—especially on the hottest days of summer. There’s nothing quite like stepping outside and cooling off in your own private oasis without packing a bag, paying for a membership, or sharing space with strangers. But, as with most luxuries, pool ownership comes with its share of responsibilities.

The Work Behind the Water

As an in-ground pool owner myself, I can honestly say it’s been more work than I first imagined.

  • Seasonal Care: Opening and closing the pool each year usually requires professional help (and a budget for it), unless you decide to handle the labor yourself. Off-season also means securing the pool with a safety cover.

  • Weekly Maintenance: Keeping a pool swimmable means testing the water, adding chemicals, brushing the pool, and backwashing the filter on a regular basis.

  • Chemical Stockpile: You’ll want chlorine pucks, pH balancers, and algae control on hand. Environmental factors like heat, humidity, rain, or even bugs can throw off your water balance.

This year, when my husband and I opened our pool, we were hit with a major algae bloom that took a couple of weeks to clear. Once the water turned crystal clear again, though, the effort felt 100% worth it. With a routine, the work becomes manageable—and the payoff is big.

The Lifestyle Upgrade

A pool isn’t just about swimming. It completely changes how you use your outdoor space:

  • Entertainment Hub: The pool often becomes the centerpiece of the backyard—a place to relax, host friends, or enjoy summer days without leaving home.

  • Privacy and Convenience: No more crowded community pools or country club dues. It’s your space, on your terms.

  • Added Appeal: For buyers, a beautiful in-ground pool paired with a patio, deck, or outdoor kitchen can transform a home into an entertainer’s dream.

Beyond looks, pools also encourage an active lifestyle and offer a peaceful escape after a long day.

The Value Question

How much value a pool adds to a home depends on several factors—your location, the quality of installation, and how desirable pools are in your market. When done well, though, a pool can absolutely increase both your home’s appeal and enjoyment.
